Song for Dear Daughter
February 7th, 2017
Music by Kristi McGarity
Lyrics by Heather Armstrong
Full Studio package
Well-known blogger Heather Armstrong tells the story of her daughter’s toddlerhood in her book Dear Daughter: The Best of the Dear Leta Letters. As I read Heather’s writing, certain sentences seemed to suggest musical lines. This song combines four passages that capture a parent’s bittersweet joy to see the “baby” suddenly telling her own jokes, making friends with other children, and heading off to explore the world.
Song for Dear Daughter
We’ve never laughed so hard
We’ve never been more aware
There is nothing in life more wonderful than this
I feel like I’ve been given
A second chance at life
A life through the magic of your eyes
The world has more color in it
Because you are looking at it
Music is louder
Because you are hearing it
I thought there was meaning in my life before you came along
But I didn’t even know
The meaning of meaning
The ten seconds that it took you
To walk over and play
Just about knocked me over with their significance
You were walking on your own
To be with other children
I will never take for granted that you can do that now
Able to take yourself where you want to go
And while this thrills me, makes my heart sing bass lines and soar with pride
I can’t help but start to think
My God, slow down
Stay
Stay
Stay
Don’t go so fast
We’ve never laughed so hard
We’ve never been more aware
There is nothing in life more wonderful than this, our family
You, who have truly made us one.
